Update for the final week of April 2024

Dear Family Worship Community,

Greetings in the love and peace of Christ.

This week, as we continue our journey through God's profound and life-giving Word, I wish to explore an essential and often discussed theological concept found within the Scriptures: the doctrine of election. Our focus will be on Romans 8:28-30, a passage that beautifully encapsulates this profound truth.

Romans 8:28-30 - Understanding Election

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified."

This passage, often referred to as the Golden Chain of Redemption, offers deep insights into the sovereign work of God in salvation. Let’s break it down:

  1. Foreknowledge - This term does not imply mere prescience but rather, denotes a personal, covenantal knowledge. God knows His people intimately and chooses them for a special purpose.

  2. Predestination - Following His foreknowledge, God appoints those He knows to be conformed to the image of Christ. This shaping process is not random but is a divine orchestration aimed at making us like His Son.

  3. Calling - The call of God is not merely an external invitation but an effective summons that inwardly compels us to come to Christ. It is irresistible and accomplishes what it intends—bringing us to faith.

  4. Justification - Those who are called are also justified. This legal declaration of righteousness is granted to us, not based on our works, but solely through faith in Jesus Christ.

  5. Glorification - Finally, those justified are promised glorification. This future state is as certain as the past acts of foreknowledge, predestination, and justification because it rests on the same divine promise.

This doctrine comforts us with the knowledge that our salvation is a work of God from first to last, secured by His power and for His glory. It challenges us to trust in God’s ultimate good for us and to live in a manner that reflects our destined glorification.

In Conclusion

May this brief study on election enrich your understanding and appreciation of God's sovereign and loving plan for His people. As we reflect on these truths, let them mold us more into the image of Christ, secure in the knowledge of our calling and destiny in Him.

In His Service,

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom..." - Colossians 3:16
