05 Family Worship Guide:

Book of Mark, Day Five, Lesson Five

Dear Family Worship Magazine Community,

Family Worship Guide: Book of Mark, Day Five, Lesson Five

These guides are designed to help you lead your family in daily worship. Each lesson is brief, lasting only 15-25 minutes. If you'd like to extend the worship time, consider adding additional hymns or reviewing the Shorter Catechism. You'll find the first lesson included below.

Opening Prayer:

"Almighty God, we thank You for this time to gather as a family to study Your Word. As we read about the works of Your Son, Jesus, help us to see His compassion and power. Open our hearts to receive Your truth, and may we grow in faith and love for You and for one another. Guide us in our discussion and help us to apply what we learn to our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen."

Scripture Reading: Mark 1:29-34 (ESV)

And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

Reflection and Teaching:

In this passage, we see the healing power and compassion of Jesus in a personal and public way. After leaving the synagogue, Jesus and His disciples went to the home of Simon (Peter) and Andrew. There, Simon’s mother-in-law was bedridden with a fever—a serious illness in those times. Without hesitation, Jesus went to her, took her by the hand, and healed her completely. Her immediate response was to get up and serve Jesus and the others.

Later that evening, the whole town came to the house, bringing those who were sick or oppressed by demons. Jesus did not turn them away. He healed many, showing His deep compassion for those who were suffering. Not only did He have the authority to teach and cast out demons, but He also cared deeply for individuals, tending to their needs with kindness and grace.

Jesus’ healing ministry was a sign that the kingdom of God was breaking into the world—His power over sickness and evil was a foretaste of the ultimate healing He would bring through His death and resurrection. His care for the sick shows us that He is not distant or indifferent but deeply concerned with our suffering and needs.

Discussion Questions:

For Younger Children (Ages 10-13):

  1. What did Jesus do when He found out that Simon’s mother-in-law was sick?

  2. How did Simon’s mother-in-law respond after Jesus healed her? Why is this important?

  3. Why do you think so many people came to Jesus that evening? What does this tell us about His power and compassion?

For Older Children (Ages 14-18):

  1. Jesus’ healing of Simon’s mother-in-law was immediate and complete. What does this teach us about His authority over sickness?

  2. Reflect on the fact that Jesus healed many people and cast out demons, yet He did not let the demons speak because they knew who He was. Why do you think Jesus silenced them?

  3. How does this passage challenge us to respond to Jesus’ healing and compassion in our own lives? In what ways can we serve Christ and others as a response to what He has done for us?

Application:

  • For All Ages: Think about how Jesus’ compassion for the sick and hurting encourages us to care for those in need around us. Discuss as a family ways you can show kindness and support to someone who is struggling or hurting this week.

  • For Older Children: Reflect on how Jesus’ healing power extends beyond physical illness to our spiritual needs. Consider areas in your life where you need Jesus’ healing touch, whether it’s dealing with sin, fear, or emotional pain. Spend time in prayer asking for His help and strength.

Closing Prayer:

"Lord Jesus, we thank You for Your great compassion and power to heal. We praise You because You care about each of our needs, both big and small. Help us to trust in You when we face challenges and to be faithful in serving You and others. May Your love flow through us as we seek to be a blessing to those around us. In Your name, we pray, Amen."

Hymn or Song:

End with a hymn or song that speaks of Jesus’ healing power and compassion, such as “He Touched Me” or “Great is Thy Faithfulness.”
